This page describes the ComicReader app. Websites, Apple services and other apps you choose to use have their own privacy practices.

At a glance

ComicReader is a reader for files you provide. It has no developer account service, developer-operated analytics backend or advertising SDK. Comic files, reading state and reading tools normally stay on your device. ComicReader sends your comic content or reading data off the device only when you choose a feature that needs it, such as optional iCloud sync, visiting a website, sharing text or transferring files. Apple system reporting is described separately below.

Comic files and local reading data

Files imported into ComicReader are stored in the app's library on your device. Collections, read status, current page and app settings are also stored locally. On Mac, opening a file directly from Finder reads the selected file in its existing location; ComicReader creates a library copy only when you choose Add to Library. You manage these files through ComicReader and the storage controls provided by your device.

Text recognition, search and reading tools

Current-page text uses embedded PDF text when available and otherwise uses Apple's on-device text recognition. ComicReader Plus can build a persistent text index for the current library comic and can store quotes, reading lists and named bookmarks. These indexes and Plus records stay on that device and are not included in ComicReader's iCloud sync. If you copy or share text, it is sent to the destination you choose through the system interface, and that destination's practices apply.

Optional personal iCloud sync

iCloud sync is off until you turn it on. When enabled, ComicReader uses your personal iCloud Drive storage to sync the comic files in its library, read or unread status and current page across devices signed in to your iCloud account. Apple operates iCloud and applies its own terms and privacy practices. Search indexes, quotes, reading lists and bookmarks are not synced. Turning sync off stops ComicReader's future sync work on that device but does not automatically remove copies that already exist locally or in iCloud; use ComicReader and the system iCloud storage controls to manage those copies.

Web browsing and external websites

ComicReader's browser uses WebKit. A normal session uses WebKit's standard persistent data store, so websites can keep cookies and website storage until you clear them. Saved website shortcuts are local; ComicReader does not save URL credentials and omits query text and fragments from saved shortcuts, while its automatic last-site entry keeps only the website origin. You can clear data for one site or for the normal browser.

A private session uses WebKit's nonpersistent data store. Ending it discards that private website session and cancels unfinished private transfers. A comic already imported into the library remains a normal library file and follows your iCloud choice.

When you visit a website, its operator receives network requests and may process details such as your network address, browser information, cookies and anything you submit. ComicReader does not control a website's content, sign-in system or privacy practices. Review the website's information before using it.

Local-network transfers

If you enable ComicReader's local-network uploader or WebDAV mode, another device on that network can connect to transfer supported files. The feature is controlled from ComicReader and is intended for networks and devices you trust. Turn it off when you no longer need the transfer service.

ComicReader Plus purchases

ComicReader Plus is purchased and restored through Apple's StoreKit. Apple handles the Apple Account, payment and billing details. ComicReader reads Apple-provided product information and entitlement status on the device so it can show the local price and unlock or restore Plus. ComicReader does not operate a purchase server and does not receive your payment-card details.

No developer analytics or advertising

ComicReader contains no developer analytics SDK and displays no advertising. Apple may process App Store transactions and, depending on your Apple sharing settings, provide developers with aggregate store metrics and opt-in usage or crash information. That Apple-provided reporting is separate from ComicReader and is governed by Apple's settings and privacy practices. Eligibility for ComicReader's native review request is recorded locally and is not sent to a developer analytics service.

Your choices and support

You decide which comics to import, whether to enable iCloud, which websites to visit, whether to use a private session, when to clear website data, and which text or files to share. For questions about ComicReader, use the existing support page. Opening it takes you to an external website with its own privacy practices.
